PETER THE PENGUIN
PICTURE STONE

I have been lucky to have carved  a variety
of stones this year.  One of the most
extraordinary  was
this picture stone, which was mined from a
remote island in northern British
Columbia and given to me to carve
by a gifted stone artist.

Picture stone is quite unique, and the design seems to tell a story
all it's own in each piece.  I don't know  what Peter's story is, but
I do know it is  thousands of  years old and probably quite amazing

    ONE THOUSAND SPRINGS
(Chiharu)
         Brucite revolving on green Granite
2 '  X  12"

This is a beautiful stone that I worked on outside waiting for Spring.
There is a girl's name in Japanese (CHIHARU )
that means one thousand springs, and I
thought it was perfect for this green sculpture.

When arguing
with a stone,
an egg
is always wrong.

-African Saying
Michelangelo said about carving in stone - just carve away the part that isn't David . . .  and although we may not all have a David in our stone . . . we do have a wonderful promise within each new piece . . . and an incredible desire to find it.  That is the easy part . . . the desire that drives a stone carver on . . . breathing dust, chipping away . . . continuing through aching back and the knowledge that the sun is setting . . .

The hard part is the rest.

NEW WORK 2011
As in nature, as in art, so in grace;
it is rough treatment
that gives souls,
as well as stones,
their luster.
